Poor but Sexy takes its title from the phrase coined by former Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit, used to describe post-Wall Berlin as a low-cost, “attractive” destination for Western capital and culture. The slogan was reused then by Agata Pyzik in her book Poor But Sexy: Culture Clashes in Europe East and West (2014), which examines cultural and ideological tensions between Eastern and Western Europe after 1989 and how, from a pro-Western perspective, the fate of the East was framed and sold. The group exhibition brings together artists of different generations, media, and geographies, including Ala Savashevich, Anastasia Sosunova, Dominika Olszowy, Mila Panić, Miroslav Tichý, and Nikita Kadan. It explores differing perspectives on post-socialist histories, cultural memory, and contemporary identity across Eastern Europe, framed through individual and collective micro-narratives.
